Our History

In the Spring of 2007, with the PE wind blowing fiercely on NMMU campus, the first seeds were sown for the growth of what today is known as Word of Life Student church. In those days the aim was to begin Bible Studies on campus which would be an introduction to the Christian faith. It was a slow start, but by May 2008 we were thrilled to have a tiny little camp, and in July a Bible conference - both of which became annual events.
At the heart of that campus ministry (first known as Bible Speaks Today) and also of the church which grew out of it, was the desire to see Christ Jesus proclaimed on the campus as the King of the world and the saviour of those who will bow their knee to him. The Bible is God’s inspired and perfect Word, and we aim to help students read it, understand it and learn to know and love the God who wrote it. There are many ways in which we have done this over the years... 1-1 discipleship, small group bible studies, camps (we now have about 6 per year), conferences, training, and  prayer meetings.
While the church that meets in central on Sunday mornings and on the campus on Sunday nights looks very different from the small groups that met on the campus in 2007, the central teaching and passion of the leadership has not changed.
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 – 14
